uAvionix AV-APA Analog Port Adapter for AV-30E

The AV-30 can provide heading and course guidance to autopilots over three interfaces: analog, RS-232 Serial, or ARINC 429.

Legacy autopilots consuming an analog heading and course signal can be connected to the AV-30 using the uAvionix AV-APA accessory.

The Trio Pro Pilot and Bendix King Aerocruze autopilots can be connected directly to the AV-30 using RS-232 serial, using the “Skyview” interface. With an Advanced Autopilot Software Unlock, the Pro Pilot and AeroCruze can be connected using the ARINC 429 interface of an AV-HSI. The ARINC 429 interface streamlines autopilot use with the autopilot control head.

All three interface types allow the heading bug from the AV-30 to drive the autopilot heading mode. The AV-APA and RS-232 serial interface allow several GPS modes.

AV-APA Supported Modes

  • DG Heading Hold
  • GPS Heading Hold
  • GPS Track Hold
  • GPS Waypoint Bearing Hold
  • GPS Steering (GPSS available when installed with AV-HSI)

Supported Autopilots Include:

  • S-TEC / Genesys Aerosystems – System 20, 30, 40, 50, 55/55X, 60-2
  • The AV-APA emulates the Bendix King KI-525A/KCS 55A heading output. If replacing a heading system other than the KCS 55A, the autopilot will need to be configured to accept KCS 55A signals.
  • Additional supported autopilot systems are to be added. Please reach out to us or uAvionix for the latest update.

Questions & Answers

What is the uAvionix AV-APA used for?

The uAvionix AV-APA (Analog Port Adapter) enables legacy autopilots to interface with the AV-30. It emulates an analog heading signal, allowing the autopilot to provide heading hold and follow GPS tracks, extending the functionality of older autopilot systems like the S-TEC 20, 30, 40, 50, 55/55X, and 60-2.

Which autopilots are compatible with the AV-APA?

The AV-APA is compatible with various legacy autopilot systems, including S-TEC/Genesys 20, 30, 40, 50, 55/55X, and 60-2. It emulates the Bendix King KI-525A/KCS-55A output, making it suitable for a wide range of older autopilot systems.

Can the AV-APA follow GPS tracks?

Yes, the AV-APA allows legacy autopilots to follow GPS tracks when connected to a compatible GPS source. It replicates the heading signal required by these autopilots to follow flight plans and GPS-based navigation.

How easy is it to install the AV-APA?

The AV-APA is designed for straightforward installation. It requires basic wiring to the AV-30E and the legacy autopilot, with minimal modifications. The installation involves mounting the adapter securely in a dry location and configuring the AV-30E to recognize and communicate with the AV-APA.

Does the AV-APA require any special configuration for different autopilots?

Depending on the specific autopilot, you may need to adjust the autopilot settings to accept the emulated heading signal provided by the AV-APA. Refer to the autopilot manufacturer’s documentation or consult a certified avionics installer for proper configuration.

What benefits does the AV-APA bring to the AV-30E system?

The AV-APA expands the functionality of the AV-30E by enabling it to interface with legacy autopilots, providing modern GPS-based navigation and heading hold. This allows pilots to maintain heading and track while using their older autopilot systems with the advanced features of the AV-30E.
